This week, Kentucky witnessed the unveiling of several large metals projects, sparking enthusiasm throughout the state, including with MI2 members Wieland North America Recycling and Southern Coil Solutions and with Century Aluminum. These investments in Northeast Kentucky, Shelby County, and Bowling Green are poised to make significant contributions to Kentucky's economy and job market. Read more about them below.

Century Aluminum Co.

Century Aluminum is planning to establish the inaugural U.S. primary aluminum smelter in Northeastern Kentucky, marking the first such endeavor in 45 years. This green smelting facility has the potential to become the most substantial investment ever seen in Eastern Kentucky, with the prospect of generating 5,500 employment opportunities during the construction phase and sustaining 1,000 permanent jobs thereafter. Century Aluminum has secured a federal grant of $500 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in support of this initiative.

Wieland North America Recycling

Wieland North America Recycling is planning to enhance its recycling capacity and capabilities within the United States by making substantial investments in cutting-edge copper scrap metal processing technology in Shelbyville. This initiative has the potential to mark the most significant investment ever seen in Shelby County and is projected to generate up to 200 permanent jobs. The project is supported by up to $270 million in DOE Industrial Demonstrations Program funding.

Southern Coil Solutions

Southern Coil Solutions is poised to transform the metals sector through a $63 million investment in an advanced distribution and transfer facility, leading to the creation of 28 new jobs in Bowling Green, Kentucky. This endeavor not only strengthens the local economy but also enhances the infrastructure supporting the metals industry, solidifying Bowling Green and Kentucky's position as a center for industrial advancement and employment expansion.
