We were privileged to welcome Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to MI2's offices last week, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to fostering innovation in the state and coming as well on the week when MI2 officially received its designation as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

The governor's visit to MI2 was part of his tour of the Western Kentucky University Innovation Campus HQ, where MI2’s offices are based. We had the opportunity to showcase how MI2's mission of bringing stakeholders throughout Kentucky’s innovation ecosystem together aligns seamlessly with the robust spirit of collaboration the WKU Innovation Campus demonstrates at its headquarters, where it brings together local/regional stakeholder groups for collaboration.

During Governor Beshear's visit, MI2 CEO Vijay Kamineni had a chance to update the governor about MI2's role in advancing Kentucky's innovation landscape since Gov. Beshear first met with metals industry executives in Spring 2022 to express the state government’s commitment to helping fund MI2’s launch if industry partners followed through on leading the way. We underscored the importance of collaboration in driving technological advancements, economic growth, and opprotunities for talented Kentuckians, emphasizing how MI2 catalyzes partnerships that transcend geographical boundaries.

Gratitude goes to our board members Mike Buckentin, President/CEO of Logan Aluminum; Dr. Tim Caboni, President of Western Kentucky University; and Monique Kuykendoll Quarterman, Executive Director of KY Innovation, for attending the tour and showing their support for MI2. Their efforts, alongside those of many other collaborators, were instrumental in organizing last week’s event and reflecting the shared belief that MI2 occupies a crucial place in Kentucky's innovation ecosystem.

MI2 stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, bringing together diverse expertise and resources to tackle the challenges and realize the opportunities of today’s metals landscape. Governor Beshear's visit not only highlighted the state's commitment to fostering innovation but to see that innovation applied to Kentucky’s comparative advantage industries.

As we continue to build bridges across the state, MI2 is dedicated to driving innovation that transcends traditional boundaries. The governor's visit reaffirmed our shared vision for a future where collaboration fuels progress. We extend our gratitude to Governor Beshear and all those who played a role in marking this milestone in our collective journey towards making Kentucky the destination for metals innovation.
