In line with President Biden’s commitment to bolstering America's clean energy workforce and enhancing manufacturing efficiency, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a $24 million funding opportunity. This initiative, part of the Investing in America agenda, aims to support workforce training programs focusing on clean energy jobs that do not require a four-year degree.
The grant will expand the existing Industrial Assessment Centers (IAC) network, including more union training programs, community colleges, and trade schools. These centers play a crucial role in advancing the administration’s goals by aiding small and midsized manufacturers (SMMs) in identifying opportunities to save costs and increase productivity.
Our strategic partner, the University of Louisville (UofL), has been at the forefront of this endeavor since 1994 as part of the IAC network. Through this partnership, UofL offers free energy efficiency assessments to small to mid-sized manufacturing companies, providing recommendations to enhance energy efficiency and offering potential funding avenues. Post-assessment, companies are eligible to apply for grants of up to $300k to implement these recommendations.
This latest grant announcement signifies a renewed commitment to supporting clean energy initiatives and expanding workforce development opportunities. The DOE's funding will prioritize training students and incumbent workers for careers in clean energy, energy efficiency, and advanced manufacturing. Importantly, this initiative aligns with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, aiming to ensure that benefits reach disadvantaged communities.
Applicants can choose from three tracks, offering various levels of funding to support the establishment or expansion of workforce training programs. From planning awards to consortia and cohort awards, institutions have the flexibility to tailor their proposals to align with their objectives and existing capabilities.
This initiative builds upon the DOE's longstanding commitment to workforce development and energy efficiency. With over four decades of experience, the IAC Program has provided invaluable support to SMMs across the nation. Today, DOE-supported IACs exist or are being established at over 50 institutions, showcasing the widespread impact of these initiatives.
We are proud of our partner UofL and their longstanding commitment to clean energy and manufacturing efficiency. For those interested in learning more about this funding opportunity, feel free to reach out to MI2’s Grants and Funding Consultant, Ruthie Caldwell, at ruthie@visiongranted.com.
