The Sustainability Strategy Group within MI2 is focused on bringing metals companies together to collaborate on pilot projects that increase sustainability for the metals industry, optimizing resources and energy consumption and seeking circular economy solutions. We are committed to executing a series of impactful projects and initiatives that align with our core mission in the coming year. These endeavors are strategically outlined to identify areas where collaborative, pre-competitive, de-risked, and open innovation can identify solutions that can scale. One of our primary aims for this fiscal year is to put MI2 on a path amplify the use of recycled feedstock originating from local Kentucky sources within the metals industry. This ambitious endeavor is designed to boost the volume of recycled materials by 10% over the next five years. To kickstart this transformative process, our focus in FY23-24 revolves around conducting a comprehensive state-wide recycling initiative feasibility report. This report will assess the most effective recycling practices adopted across various states and municipalities, thereby identifying potential approaches to bolster recycling activities throughout Kentucky.MI2 will also be spearheading efforts to augment the clean energy supply for metals production in Kentucky. With the objective of enhancing the clean energy supply by 10% over the next five years, our attention in the upcoming fiscal year will be directed toward formulating a comprehensive clean energy plan. This comprehensive strategy entails assessing the impact of new energy transmission rulings; collaborating on expansive ecosystem clean energy projects with key stakeholders such as the government, utility companies, and other industries; and nurturing existing pilot projects to inform these approaches. For instance, MI2 is working on an industry-wide effort to consider how to measure waste heat and pilot waste heat conversion technologies. By collating vital data and establishing best practices for waste heat conversion, we aim to showcase the viability of this technology through a proof-of-concept pilot to be implemented at an MI2 member facility during FY23-24. This active demonstration serves as a testament to the efficacy of waste heat conversion, laying the groundwork for widespread adoption within the industry.Another pivotal focus for the Sustainability Strategy Group is to drive a transformative shift in the utilization of non-diesel fork trucks within Kentucky metals plants. This endeavor involves piloting the use of alternative energy sources for powering fork trucks, thereby paving the way for a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional diesel-fueled vehicles. By championing the transition to non-diesel vehicles, we aim to showcase the feasibility and practicality of adopting environmentally friendly alternatives, inspiring further adoption and scaling of similar initiatives within the industry. As the Sustainability Strategy Group remains dedicated to pioneering sustainable practices within the metals industry, these outlined projects and initiatives underscore our unwavering commitment to fostering a more environmentally conscious and resource-efficient future for Kentucky's metals sector. Through collaborative efforts and a pursuit of innovation, we aim to set new benchmarks for sustainability within the industry, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and resilience for years to come.
