Since 1981, sustainability has been at the heart of Logan Aluminum’s foundation, culture, and principles. We believe it is our duty to support our local communities, protect the environment in which we work and live, and provide leadership in state and local organizations.

As the single largest rolling mill producing aluminum sheet for beverage cans in North America, Logan Aluminum provides aluminum for over 45% of the North American can market. In a recent study conducted by Ball Corporation, it indicated that the recycling rate in Kentucky was only 16%. Logan Aluminum recognized the aluminum scrap market and collection must improve to support the continued growth of the aluminum industry.

Last year, Logan Aluminum launched a recycling program to encourage community members to Close the Loop with recycling. Through our partnership with Logan County elementary schools, collection bins and educational materials were provided to teach students about the value of recycling.

“By raising awareness and providing tools to our children, we can instill lifelong recycling habits and recover this valuable resource,” Environmental Engineer Laura Haury said. “Aluminum is infinitely recyclable, and it’s our goal to keep every can out of the landfill.”

On a parallel path, Logan Aluminum has been working with Western Kentucky University and other regional partnerships. The aluminum collected from partnering locations is recycled directly back to Logan Aluminum and remelted to be returned to the shelves as a new can within 60 days. Aluminum recycling is excellent for the environment as it conserves so much energy; melting scrap aluminum is much less energy intensive than melting prime aluminum. Recycling reduces our need for imports, fuels the local economy, and reduces fuel consumption and transportation costs.

Logan Aluminum hosted our inaugural Earth Day Vendor Fair on Wednesday, April 24th. Vendors from surrounding communities set up in the administrative office hallway, offering a large array of local products and information about environmental initiatives. Logan Aluminum is proud to announce our membership with Kentucky Proud, our state’s official agricultural program. Leading the way as the first manufacturing facility with an on-site cafe enrolled in the Buy Local program, we are confirming our commitment to serving fresh, local food while supporting Kentucky’s farm families.

Logan Aluminum remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental stewardship and looks forward to continuing its efforts to promote sustainability both within the organization and throughout the community.
